It comes from the latest annual report from the Irish Prison Service.
Prisons in the Midlands had no addiction specialists available last year.
The Irish Prison Service's Annual Report 2024 shows that while addiction counselling was available, neither the Midlands or Portlaoise Prisons, were able to offer specialist services.
The report also shows there's been no occupational therapy services in either prison, with physiotherapy only being available in Portlaoise Prison.
One chief nurse officer was available for every 22 nurses in Midlands Prison, while the ratio was one to eight in Portlaoise.
A more positive trend was recorded in education programmes, where the participation rate rose in both prisons over the year from 47% to 70% in Portlaoise and 39 to 55% in Midlands.
Former Governor of Portlaoise Prison Ciaran Reilly says it links back to overcrowding:
The latest report also shows from the Irish Prison Service shows Midlands Prison had 875 beds at the end of last year, with 962 in custody.
While Portlaoise had 237 prisoners with only 226 beds available.
Nationally, there's been a 156% increase in the number of prisoners sleeping on mattresses on floors because of overcrowding.
Mr Reilly says measures are being taken:
