Offaly Cathaoirleach Backs OPW Over Flood Prone Sites Policy

Councillor John Leahy believes it doesn't make sense to put new developments in those areas.

The Offaly Cathaoirleach says if local authorities give permission to zone on floodplains they don't deserve compensation. 

It comes as OPW Minister and Longford Westmeath TD Kevin "Boxer" Moran warns any future homes built on flood plains won't qualify for publicly funded flood protection. 

Nationally, councillors attempted to zone almost 300 flood-prone sites for development over the past six years and the regulator stepped in 93 times to block plans affecting 288 of the sites.
