Offaly Garda To Receive Bronze Medal And Bravery Award

Offaly Garda David Nolan will be the recipient.

An Garda Detective Superintendent from Offaly  is to be awarded a Bronze medal and Certificate of Bravery today.

It's one of twenty two national awards to be handed out this year to people who have risked their lives for other people.

At around 2:30 on the morning of Tuesday April 1st 2003, Gardai heard reports of a young man entering the River Nore in Kilkenny.

Despite the freezing cold and fast flow of the river, Offaly Garda David Nolan entered the water with a rope where the man was last seen.

When he found no sign of him,he then joined colleagues who were searching from the riverbank

Eventually, the man was spotted and Garda Nolan dove back in, swimming to him and putting the rope around him.

He was joined by Roscommon Garda John Carroll as the flow was considerable at the time and the river was being dreged.

Both Gardai managed to keep him afloat and brought him ashore.

Unfortunately, the man was unresponsive and passed away shortly after leaving the water.

22 years later, the now Garda Superintendent Nolan and Garda Carroll are being awarded a Bronze medal and a Certificate of Bravery in this year's Bravery Awards for their efforts.

The awards ceremony takes place at Leinster House today with Ceann Comhairle, Verona Murphy to present the medals.
