PAC Chair Would Support Government Bailout Of RTÉ

RTÉ hasn't approached the government yet, but the Public Expenditure Minister believes the broadcaster 'likely' will.

The Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee says he would support a government bailout of RTÉ, but only if there's 'serious reform.'

The broadcaster is expected to face major funding challenges as a result of the payment's scandal.

No approach has been made to the government as yet, but yesterday Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said any bailout in the past came with strict conditions.

While the Public Expenditure Minister, Pascal Donohoe, believes it's 'likely' RTÉ will seek assistance from the government.

The decision by RTÉ's Director General to order an investigation into the broadcaster's voluntary exit schemes is a clear indication he has concerns.

That's according to the National Union of Journalists, who is welcoming the announcement by Kevin Bakhurst.

The Irish Secretary of the NUJ, Ferbane's Seamus Dooley says there's long been concerns at the lack of transparency and the inconsistency in the handling of applications at the State broadcaster.

He says the board must have a role in day-to-day redundancies:
