A road safety campaigner says the number of people fined for speeding yesterday is shocking.
Tougher enforcement measures for poor driving are needed to improve road safety.
Road safety campaigner, Birr's Christina Donnelly, says it's heartbreaking to witness the rising number of people being killed on our roads.
Her son Brendan was killed by a drunk driver in Cork in 2009.
665 people were detected speeding during National Slow Down Day yesterday, with a motorist in Tullamore travelling 85km/h over the speed limit being referred to as an 'alarming detection' by Gardaí.
They were arrested for dangerous driving and are due for a court appearance.
Ms. Donnelly says it's shocking to see that many people fined:
Gardaí also spotted a motorist travelling at 141km/hour on the N4 at The Downs in Westmeath last night.
An increased Garda presence on the roads has expired, with the joint-campaign coming to an end at 7am.
Safety chiefs are thanking motorists for their compliance yesterday, but appealing to drivers to continue to comply with speed limits all year around.
Chief Superintendent Jane Humphries says people have been listening to the safety message:
