Government Considering 'Carrot' To Keep Landlords In Market - Midlands TD

Cabinet is expected to freeze evictions until the end of March, after the Attorney General gave plans the go-ahead.

A midlands minister says the government will find a way to reward "small landlords" to encourage them to stay in the market, as the coalition is set to table an evictions ban bill today.

It's unclear when it will take effect, as the measure will need to pass in both the Dáil and Seanad. 

The Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers believes it will cause private landlords to leave the market.

Junior Minister and Longford-Westmeath Fine Gael TD, Peter Burke acknowledges IPAV's concern and says the state is working to find a solution:

The Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers has "absolutely no faith" in the government to do anything to help small landlords this winter.

The government plans to bring in an evictions ban from the 1st of November, which will run until next April.

IPAV argues the move will cause an exodus of landlords - already struggling with mortgage costs - from the market.
