Minister Pippa Hackett says it's a huge opportunity for indigenous job creation.
People living and working in the midlands are invited to share their views on how a €168 million Just Transition Fund should be spent.
Funding from the EU Territorial Plan - available to regions across Europe directly hit by the decarbonisation process - is being described as "a potential gamechanger" by Junior Agriculture Minister Pippa Hackett.
A public consultation, to gather ideas for the government's submission to the EU, is currently underway until February 14th, with the application to be finalised this summer.
If successful, the Irish government will match the €84 million in funding and begin rolling it out next year.
It can be spent over the next five to six years.
