The collision, involving two trucks, occurred eastbound between Junction 13 Athlone and Junction 14 Ballinasloe at about 5.45 yesterday evening.
One man was taken to Galway University Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Both westbound and eastbound lanes remain closed this morning pending a technical examination and the safe removal of the lorries.
Motorists travelling eastbound are asked to divert at Junction 14 Ballinasloe (Creagh) and take the R446 (Old Ballinasloe/Athlone Road) to Athlone, where they can re-join the motorway at Junction 13 Athlone (Monksland).
The westbound lane is expected to reopen later this morning, while the eastbound lane is expected to remain closed until this afternoon.
