The woman allegedly assaulted believed she was about to be strangled and suffocated.
A man in Westmeath is being charged with assault causing harm alongside two other counts under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act.
53 year old Vaidotas Gedvilas, of Ashfield, Mullingar, Westmeath appeared at a sitting of Mullingar District Court yesterday.
The Irish Independent is reporting Mr Gedvilas is charged with "intentionally or recklessly" causing his alleged female victim to "believe on reasonable grounds" she would be "immediately subjected" to strangulation and suffocation.
The three charges are alleged to have taken place between November 29 and November 30 last year at 134 Ashfield, Mullingar, Westmeath.
Gardaí giving evidence yesterday said the accused initially said he "only touched her neck" when served with the strangulation charge before acknowledging "it did happen" when being given the suffocation charge.
Mr Gedvilas was remanded on bail to reappear at a sitting of Mullingar District Court on November 6 for the anticipated serving of a book of evidence.
