Willie Aird will be hoping to retain the party's seat in Laois, which has been long-held by Charlie Flanagan.
Fine Gael has selected its candidate to contest the General Election in Laois.
Portlaoise Councillor, Willie Aird, was chosen to represent the party at a selection convention in the Killeshin Hotel in Laois last night.
He will be seeking to retain the Fine Gael seat in the three-seat Laois constituency, which has been long-held by former Justice Minister and Laois Offaly TD, Charlie Flanagan, who last year announced he would be stepping down.
Councillor Aird has served as a public rep with the party since 1978.
Owner of Laois Today, Steven Miller, expects Fine Gael will add a second candidate in the future:
It means Fine Gael has now selected 39 General Election candidates in 26 constituencies.
In a statement to Midlands 103, Councillor Willie Aird says he's honoured to have been chosen:
"Accessibility and accountability are the cornerstones of effective representation and I have always made it my priority to be available to hear peoples’ concerns.
As a farmer and longtime councillor, I understand the challenges facing our community and have a proven track record of delivering real results.
If elected to the Dáil, I will work tirelessly to advance Laois as a hub for job creation, ensuring our county becomes a business, industrial, and tourism base for the Midlands.
I will also advocate for better infrastructure, including improved roads and transport, to meet the needs of our growing population.
Housing remains a top priority for me, and I am committed to ensuring access to private, social, and affordable housing, along with the necessary health and education services that go with it."
