Westmeath County Council was awarded €3.2 million in funding under Fáilte Ireland’s Regenerative Tourism Scheme.
The visitor centre of a popular Midlands Castle is set to close for nine months.
A substantial redevelopment project will see Athlone Castle Visitor Centre close until Autumn of next year after Westmeath County Council secured €3.2m in funding through Fáilte Ireland’s Regenerative Tourism Scheme.
The works will see significant upgrades to its ageing mechanical systems, a reconfiguration of the visitor centre layout, and enhancements to the courtyard, reception and retail areas.
The local authority says the return date of Autumn 2026 is subject to change over the next nine months.
