Mr Drennan died following a hit-and-run in October 2023.
The DPP is appealing the sentence handed down to the killer of Laois student, Joe Drennan.
The 21 year old from Mountrath was killed in a hit and run in Limerick City in 2023 - with the driver, Kieran Fogarty of Hyde Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston, Limerick, sentenced last month to six and a half years in prison.
However, the Drennan family and supporters launched a campaign urging the DPP to intervene, after learning it would run alongside an existing, longer sentence for gun offences.
More than 1,00 people took part in a demonstration in Mountrath calling for the DPP's intervention, and for a change to the current laws.
The Drennan family want a reform of consecutive sentencing laws for crimes involving loss of life.
Joe's sister, Sarah, says the appeal is a big step in their efforts to get justice for her brother:
