There are currently 10 reviews in train regarding maternity services at the hospital.

A tenth review into maternity care at Portiuncula Hospital is now underway following the recent death of a baby.

The HSE investigation, comes after a series of serious incidents, including seven cases of babies suffering brain injuries during or after birth since 2024.

Six of those infants required specialist cooling treatment.

Two stillbirths in 2023 are also under external review.

In January, HSE West and North West said they were appointing a highly experienced management team to oversee and manage maternity services at the hospital.

None of the nine reviews currently being carried out have been completed, however a number of them will be completed shortly.

Sinn Fein's Health Spokesperson, David Cullinane says it's very concerning:

In a statement to Midlands 103 the HSE says an external management team is "working closely" with Portiuncula University Hospital's maternity unit after the latest death of a baby at the facility.

Here is their statement in full:

"An external management team remains in place in PUH to oversee all elements of maternity and neonatal care.

The team are working closely with the Women and Children’s Network in the region and the local maternity unit to ensure quality and safety in the service.

There are a number of independent, external reviews being carried out into the care provided to women and their babies in PUH and we expect a number of these to be completed shortly.

Once completed the findings of each individual review will be shared with the families involved.

A further external review has recently commenced into the care provided to a pregnant woman at the hospital where sadly her baby died.

This brings to 10 the number of reviews underway into care provided to women and babies at the hospital."
