John Broderick was born exactly 100 years ago.
An Athlone author is set to be commemorated with a special centenary event.
John Broderick was born on this day in 1924, and wrote 12 novels in his lifetime, including The Waking of Willie Ryan and The Pilgrimage.
He passed away in England in 1989.
A tribute to Mr. Broderick's life will be held at the Luan Gallery from 6pm to 8pm, which will see the winner of the John Broderick writer's residency announced, and 'The Walking of Willie Ryan' re-launched in print and as an audio book.
Sinéad O’Reilly, Director of Combined Arts in the Arts Council, says:
"With this centenary event and residency series we are shining a spotlight on his legacy and his rightful place alongside literary peers such as Brendan Behan and Flann O’Brien.
His dedication to the arts and hometown of Athlone deserves this celebration of his life and works and the affirmation of his lasting impact on the literary world."
Cllr Frankie Keena, Mayor of Athlone Municipal District, says "Westmeath has produced some fine cultural figures, and among its best is John Broderick. The centenary of Broderick’s birth allows us the opportunity to celebrate Broderick’s significant contributions to Ireland’s literary culture and his cultural contributions to the town of Athlone. We look forward to gathering in Athlone’s stunning Luan Gallery on July 30 to celebrate Broderick’s life and legacy."
