The are seeking permission for nine new classrooms.
The ESB is looking to expand its training centre in the midlands.
It's submitted a planning application to Laois County Council for the addition of nine new classrooms at its facility in Portlaoise.
The planning file proposes the development of a new two-storey building, which will be linked to the existing National Training Centre in Portlaoise.
The ESB is seeking planning permission for a period of five years.
It says the development will facilitate it to achieve the Net Zero by 2040 Strategy, part of which will see the body hire 1,000 people between 2022 and 2025.
It also says there's a growing need for upskilling in the energy sector, and the proposed development highlights that.
The planning report states the ESB is hoping to begin construction of the project in the final quarter of this year, with a completion date of the end of next year, subject to planning permission being granted.
A decision from Laois County Council is due by the end of the March.
