There was a 40% decrease in the number of midlands houses and apartments granted planning permission in the second quarter of the year.
Figures from the Central Statistics Office show Westmeath saw the largest number of approvals in the region, at 68.
The figure in Laois was 23, a reduction of 81 on the first quarter of the year, and 22 in Offaly.
Just over 8,500 dwellings nationally were granted planning permission by local authorities between April and June.
The Central Statistics Office says the number of multi-development houses receiving permission in the second quarter rose by 52%.
