Calls To Increase Penalty Points In Bid To Stem Rising Road Deaths

16 people were killed on midlands roads last year.

The Irish Road Victims Association is calling for an increase in penalty points in a bid to tackle the rising number of road deaths.

Speeding, dangerous overtaking and holding a phone while driving currently incur a penalty of three points, but the Mullingar organisation says motorists need to fear losing their license after the first time they've been caught.

184 people were killed on Irish roads in 2023 - 16 of those were in the midlands.
