Gardaí are investigating the incident, which saw two people assault the man and woman, who are in their 80s and 70s respectively, at their home in Cartron Drive in Athlone on Friday evening.
A sum of cash was also taken during the course of the burglary.
The male homeowner received treatment for his injuries at the scene, and a technical examination has already been carried out.
The incident occurred less than a week after another aggravated burglary in Athlone, which saw a man in his 70s assaulted in his home.
Gardaí are seeking information particularly from anyone who was in the Retreat Road or Cartron Drive estate between 5pm and 6.30pm on Friday, and may have seen something out of the ordinary.
