Government Considering E-Scooter Ban

Under current law, riders must be at least 16 years of age.

The Government says its considering a range of measures to tackle concerns around e-scooters, including the possibility of a ban.

Laois Independent TD Brian Stanley told Midlands 103 this week there is a need to regulate e-scooters like they're vehicles and not toys for children.

Just under half of the intensive care unit beds in Temple Street hospital were occupied recently with children injured by e-scooters, including one from Laois.

It also follows the death of a teenager in Carlow after falling from one last month. 

Deputy Stanley believes licences, tax and insurance should be required for users.

135 children under that age have been prosecuted for illegally using e-scooters over the past two years. 

A further 16 adults have been prosecuted for allowing a child to use one.

Appearing before the Oireachtas Transport Committee today, Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly indicated an outright ban would make enforcement much simpler:
