Converting Shannonbridge or Lanesborough power stations into gas fired plants would be a big undertaking, according to a midlands environmental consultant.
Plans being put in place by Eirgrid to sustain the national supply could see new gas burning facilities constructed in 2024 or 2025 to meet demand.
That's despite existing stations in the midlands ceasing operations in 2020.
