Justice Minister Denies Government Backed Down To Protestors At Proposed Asylum Seeker Accommodation

Two sites, which were due to accommodate male asylum seekers, will now house families instead.

The Justice Minister denies the Government backed down to protesters outside accommodation centres which are due to house asylum seekers.

The Capuchin Friary building in Carlow, and another centre in Mayo, were due to take in international protection applicants which were all men, which led to protests in both areas.

However, that was changed with both centres now taking in families instead.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee says the Government has always committed to housing women and children first:

The u-turn on plans is being criticised by the Movement of Asylum Seekers in Ireland.

Lucky Khambule, Co-founder of the organisation, says a number of people have now been left without accommodation;

it also believes the Government needs to tackle the rise of the far right.

Mr. Khambule says men seeking international protection are wrongly being branded as predators;
