A midlands motoring journalist battling cancer says he hopes to be "back up and running" before the end of the year.

Portlaoise's Bob Flavin was diagnosed with mouth cancer in May, after his dental hygienist noticed an issue during a standard cleaning procedure.

He says he's feeling fine physically, but he "doesn't sound right," and "eating is a problem."

Mr. Flavin says his wife has been his anchor since his diagnosis:

Deireann iriseoir tiomána, atá ag troid in aghaidh na hailse, go bhfuil sé ag súil go mbeidh sé "ar a sheanléim arís" roimh deireadh na bliana.

Is as Port Laoise ó dhúchas é Bob Ó Flabháin agus diagnóisíodh go raibh ailse béil aige i mí Bealtaine nuair a thug a shláinteolaí fiacla faoi deara go raibh rud éigin mícheart ag gnáthamh glanta.

Deireann sé go bhfuil sé ag mothú ceart go leor go fisiciúil faoi láthair, ach "ní fuaimníonn a ghuth mar is ceart," agus "tá deacrachtaí ithe aige."

Deireann an tUasal Ó Flabháin go raibh a bhean chéile mar a chrann taca ó fuair sé an diagnóis.

Mr. Flavin says he's amazed at the response to a fundraiser started to support him financially.

The fundraiser was organised by Bumblebee 1000, a charity which hosts super car oriented road trips to raise funds for terminally ill children - Mr. Flavin is a regular volunteer for the organisation.

The GoFund Me started with a goal of €25,000 and now stands at just over €29,000.

He says he was shocked looking at the figures:
