150,950 batteries were saved for recycling and avoided landfill thanks to schools across the midlands.

Westmeath had the highest total in the region, with 83,850 batteries saved.

Offaly and Laois had 36,000 and 31,100 respectively.

Nationally, two million used AA batteries were prevented from going to the landfill.

The schools were taking part in WEEE Ireland's School Battery Recycling Competition.

The nation's largest e-waste and battery recycling scheme also supports the LauraLynn Children's Hospice.

"Binning batteries is a big problem because the materials lost to landfill are increasingly in short supply,” said Leo Donovan, CEO of WEEE Ireland.

He also added that the harm they cause to the environment, including animals and plants, can often be severe.
