Third Of Childcare Workers Considering Leaving Sector

A new report cites pay as the most common reason for workers wanting to leave.

More than a third of childcare workers say they're considering leaving the sector.

New figures from trade union SIPTU, show over 90% of providers say problems retaining staff is impacting the quality of care they can give to children. 

That's despite the Government increasing funding for the sector by €173 million.

Pay was the most common reason given for wanting leave the sector. 

More than a third say they work hours they don’t get paid for. 

Early childcare educators are quitting to pursue better paid roles as SNAs or in retail, according to the report.

Athlone's Regina Bushell from Grovelands Childcare Plus says the increased funding has made little difference to her business: 

SIPTU says further pay increases will be needed to secure the future of many services.
