It's the first time the current County Cathaoirleach will run in a general election.
Fianna Fáil has selected its preferred candidate for the general election in Offaly.
County Cathaoirleach Tony McCormack has been nominated at a selection convention at the Tullamore Court Hotel yesterday evening.
The Tullamore rep saw off competition from his county council colleagues Peter Ormond and Eddie Fitzpatrick.
He'll enter the election chasing one of three seats in the newly reformed Offaly constituency.
Mr. McCormack was recently returned to the county council after the fourth count for the Tullamore Municipal District, after collecting 1,329 first preference votes.
A general election must be called no later than March of next year, but it is expected to be held shortly after the announcement of this year's budget on October 1st.
