That's according to the author of 'The Gilligan Tapes'.
Vanity and score settling were behind John Gilligan's decision to open up on his life in gangland crime, according to the Author of The Gilligan Tapes.
It comes after the first of a three-part programme about Mr. Gilligan was aired on Virgin Media on Monday night.
The 71 year old recently struck a plea deal with Spanish prosecutors in relation to drug smuggling and weapons charges to avoid a custodial sentence.
The documentary series is centred on Author Jason O'Toole, who lived in Mullingar for 10 years, and his multiple interviews with the lifetime criminal.
