Complaints Of Rowdiness On Quiet Carriages On Midlands Irish Rail Service

The initiative was launched to improve journeys for people with sensory issues and overall customer experience.

Irish Rail has received complaints in relation to rowdiness on specifically marked "quieter carriages" on a midlands service. 

The initiative was launched on the Dublin to Cork service in November last year to improve journeys for people with sensory issues and overall customer experience. 

Less than a month after the quieter coaches initiative was launched on the route which services Portlaoise, Irish Rail received a complaint regarding an incident in the designated quiet zone. 

The complaint says a woman, who the writer described as “under the influence” was shouting and  threatening passengers, saying she had scissors in her bag.

The complaint says though the main who was getting shouted at was removed from the quiet carriage, the woman in this instance was not. 

The complaints come on top of internal emails seen by the Irish Independent, whereby staff complained of “confrontational reaction” when they asked passengers to keep their voices down or end phone calls.

The paper adds that Irish Rail has no plans in place to roll out "quieter carriages" on other routes and that a penalty system would not be introduced for rule breakers
