The court case involving an elderly midlands woman, charged with multiple incidents of theft spanning a 29-year period, has been adjourned until September.

72-year-old Margaret Bergin, of Fairfield House in Mountrath, appeared before Portlaoise District Court yesterday, charged with 10 sample charges of theft and five sample changes of larceny totaling over €270,000 between 1993 and 2023.

Detective Garda Peter Cosbie from the Special Investigation Unit of the Department of Social Protection alleged in March 2022 an amateur Gerontologist in Cork noticed there was a man aged 110 living in Mountrath.

He was carrying out research into the oldest living people in the world at the time.

Detective Cosbie said the man contacted Áras an Uachtaráin, who issue bursary payments and celebratory coins to people who have reached the age of 100 and was informed that the Mountrath man, if he was alive, was born on 2 July 1911.

The Department of Social Protection was informed of the situation, and investigated the case.

Det. Cosbie alleged Ms Bergin claimed €271,046 of state pension for the deceased man over 29-years.

He said there was no objection to bail.

Judge Andrew Cody adjourned the case until 7 September for the service of a Book of Evidence.
