ESB Confirms It Won't Refire Midlands Power Stations

That's despite the Just Transition Commissioner advising they be held in reserve until future electricity needs were assessed.

The ESB won't refire two midlands power stations, as plans for their redeployment are already underway.

That's despite the Just Transition Commissioner Kieran Mulvey advising the plants be held in reserve in his original report to the company. 

The plants in Shannonbridge and Lanesborough closed in December of last year. 

The ESB is seeking planning permission for the redevelopment of both sites. 

This will involve the construction of electrical grid support hubs, which will facilitate greater levels of renewable energy generation.

The new process will include energy storage through the use of batteries and will be offered to the grid operator through upcoming auctions for system services.

The decision was made despite Just Transition Commissioner Kieran Mulvey advising both plants be kept on a care and maintenence basis until future electricity needs were assessed:
