The incident happened on Saturday.
Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after three train carriages were damaged with graffiti in Westmeath.
The criminal damage occurred between 4:00am and 6:00am on Saturday, at Athlone Train Station.
Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area at the time to come forward.
Road users or pedestrians with camera footage, including dash-cam recordings, are urged to provide it to Gardaí.
