Gardaí are appealing for witnesses after a serious assault on a woman, which took place between 12 and 12:30 on Saturday morning near Athlone Castle.
The attacker fled the scene and another man came to the aid of the victim.
The good samaritan waited with the woman until her friends arrived, and Gardaí are appealing for him to come forward.
A man was later arrested in connection with the assault and is being detained at Athlone Garda Station.
Gardaí are asking anyone who was in the vicinity at the time and may have witnessed this assault to contact Athlone Garda Station on 090 649 8550.
