A midlands TD says closing local power stations now doesn't make sense.
The record for demand for electricity was broken twice in the past week.
Eirgrid, which runs the national grid, is warning there's a risk of a deficit of electricity in the coming months.
Technical faults were also recorded at three power stations during the past seven days.
Business journalist Gavin McLoughlin says Eirgrid had to issue alerts:
A former environment minister says he can't see why two midland power stations are being shut down when Ireland is facing issues around electricity supply.
The West Offaly power plant in Shannonbridge is being taken off the grid today, with its sister station in Lanesborough closing next Friday, as part of the transition to more renewable energy.
But Independent Roscommon-Galway TD Denis Naughten believes there are viable alternatives to burning peat in midlands stations that should be explored:
CLOSURE: The West Offaly power plant will be taken off the grid this afternoon.
