Mullingar is set to get its own memorial in the next few months.
Soldiers, from a Westmeath town, who served in the siege of Jadotville are to be recognised with a new memorial.
Councillors in Mullingar are backing the installation of the memorial which is expected to cost in the region of €7,000 and will be completed in around four to five months.
The siege of Jadotville saw 156 Irish troops, many of whom were from Westmeath, acting as peacekeepers resisting repeated attacks from a force of 5,000 in the Congo in 1961.
A dedicated monument for Athlone veterans of the battle was erected in Custume Barracks in 2022.
