Local Authorities Could Make Cuts Due To Commerical Rate Shortfall

That's the warning from councillors who say small businesses can't be expected to pay up.

The covid-19 crisis has created a catch-22 when it comes to commercial rates in the midlands.

The pandemic has forced businesses to close, leaving many unable to pay the fee, and facing an uncertain future.

However, a quarter of Offaly County Council's income comes from commercial rates, and independent councillor Seán O'Brien says they'll be forced to make cuts if they can't source this revenue.

He's says small, struggling businesses cannot be expected to pay and is calling for the government to intervene:
