The Tánaiste says a midlands barracks is in consideration to become the new Army HQ.
There's been long-standing calls for Custume Barracks in Athlone to become the new Headquarters, due to its central location in the country.
A report by the Commission on the Defence Forces last year recommended an urgent restructuring of the Army.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Mullingar has suggested Columb Barracks as the site for the new Army HQ.
The Mullingar premises is no longer operational under the defence forces after it was closed in 2012.
It is now primarily used by asylum seekers and local groups.
