Midlands Stroke Victims Facing A 'Precarious Service'

The closure of a nearby strokes unit has led to issues with patients in the midlands, according to a local TD.

Stroke victims in Laois have been left with a 'precarious service' since the closure of the unit in Naas Hospital.

That's according to Laois Offaly Sinn Féin TD Brian Stanley, who says victims from Portlaoise Hospital had been transferred to Naas prior to its closure.

It was expected those patients would now be sent to Tallaght Hospital, but Deputy Stanley says that's not the case, as it's a voluntary facility with no obligation to take them.

Health Minister Stephen Donnelly says the government is investing in stroke services:

The Health Minister has committed to examining the issue and taking it up with the HSE.
