Operations at the Bord Na Móna facility ceased in May.
The midlands can survive the closure of Bord na Móna facilities like the Derrinlough Briquette Factory, according to Irish Rural Link.
The semi-state body were recently accused by SIPTU of breaking the terms of the agreement entered over the closure of the factory.
It's because the company has decided to put the site in Offaly up for sale without consultation with the unions.
Operations at the Offaly plant ceased at the end of May.
CEO of Irish Rural Link, Ballycumber's Seamus Boland has been speaking to Sinéad Hubble on Midlands Today, and says communities suffer from closures like Derrinlough, but the midlands can still sustain growth and development:
