A Midlands Judge says the majority of cases could be dealt with through mediation.
Work on a new bill that would reform the family law system is said to be at an advanced stage.
It's estimated the Family Court Bill will be published in six months time.
Last year almost 57 thousand applications were made to the courts in relation to family law matters such as guardianship and custody.
While over 5,200 applications were made for divorce and judicial separations.
Midlands Judge Keenan Johnson says the majority of these cases could be dealt with through mediation.
A move from litigation to mediation is the vision for the future of family law proceedings in Ireland.
There are uncommitted plans to build a new dedicated family law court in Smithfield in Dublin.
CEO of the Legal Aid Board John McDaid outlines his vision for the new court:
The Department of Justice says the aim of the Family Courts Bill is to improve levels of judicial expertise and training in family law matters and streamline family law proceedings, thereby making them more user-friendly and less costly.
