A midalnds councillor is appealing for the process to be updated.
People are waiting up to 10 months for a prosthetic limb from the HSE.
That's according to Laois councillor Aisling Moran, who is calling on the Health Minister to improve the timeframe.
Patients receive a temporary aid while they are awaiting the specialised prosthetic, but are left waiting six months for the application to be processed and a further 3-4 months while it's being made.
The Fine Gael rep is also recommending more measurements be taken to improve the accuracy of the mobility aid.
The reliability of the single measurement system is being questioned after recipients told Cllr. Moran their aids were the wrong size:
