The Clonaslee Flood Relief Scheme application, submitted in June 2025, has been approved.
Planning Permission is being granted for a long called-for flood relief scheme in Laois.
The Clonaslee Flood Relief Scheme was put together in 2020 in response to severe flooding caused by the overflow and blockage along the Clodiagh and Gorragh Rivers.
The plan includes a range of targeted measures including the construction of new flood defence walls, formation of protective embankments, debris traps, and culvert upgrades along the Clodiagh River.
In granting its approval, An Coimisiún Pleanala says that the scheme is ‘in the interest of the common good by greatly reducing the risk of flooding in the village.'
While Laois County Council Director of Services Simon Walton says the project will provide essential protection for homes and families in the area.
