Dara Calleary's name is one of a number of front runners to succeed the Fianna Fail leader before the next general election.
It comes after sustained ciriticism of the party's handling of the fuel price protests earlier this month from the likes of Midlands Senator Joe Flaherty among others.
Minister Calleary is in Laois today to open a number of community hubs.
