Tullamore Hospital Had The Country's Lowest Number Of Patients Waiting For A Bed In July

Nationally 7,832 people were left on trolleys.

Only one person was left waiting on a trolley during the month of July at the Midlands Regional Hospital Tullamore.

The latest figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation show 7,832 people, including 138 children, went without a bed in facilities around the country this month.

Mullingar Hospital had the highest number in the region with 162 patients on trolleys in the last 31 days, while 92 were left waiting in Portlaoise.

The INMO says  "staff cannot be expected to just endure these conditions for another winter" as over 72-thousand have been without a bed in 2023.

INMO Industrial Relations Officer for the midlands, Gráinne Walsh, says good practices in Tullamore should be replicated where possible:

The number of patients on trolleys this year is 10% higher than the same time period last year.

The INMO says the figures are a "red flag warning for the winter ahead".

Its General Secretary Phil Ní Sheaghdha says the HSE needs to set out what it's going to do:

Meanwhile, the re-organisation of the HSE has moved a step closer.

Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly says the establishment of six regions will come into effect in February.

Further reforms will be rolled out over the next two years.

The changes are designed to improve the Health Service Executive's ability to deliver more joined-up care to people when they need it.
