Midlands TDs Question Taoiseach's Idea For May Election

The Taioseach wants a General Election in May 2020

Midlands TDs are questioning the Taoiseach's announcement yesterday that a general election should be held next summer.

Both Fianna Fáil and Labour believe the government needs prioritise Brexit, instead of making election plans.

Yesterday, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said he believes May 2020 would be the ideal time for a general election.

But Labour's Willie Penrose feels now is not the time to be planning an election.

With a no-deal Brexit on the horizon, he believes the government must focus on steering the country through that uncertainty:

Leo Varadkar also made some scathing comments about Fianna Fáil, saying the party cannot be trusted.

Fianna Fáil deputy Robert Troy disagrees - he believes they have a track record of sticking to their word and putting the country before the party.

Offaly's Barry Cowen says the government can talk about elections all it wants, but it's not in the interest of the people to go the polls while Brexit negotiations continue.

Deputy Cowen says political maneuvering is not what the public needs right now:

But for the time being, eyes are likely to be on the UK, as next month's Brexit date approaches.
