Irish Water says crews are working to complete the repairs as quickly as possible.
A mechanical fault at a midlands water treatment plant is leading to a second night of restrictions.
Customers in Athlone and the surrounding areas are advised of restrictions between 10 o'clock tonight and 6 o'clock tomorrow morning.
Irish Water says the outage is required to safeguard supply for daytime hours following a fault at the treatment plant yesterday.
Crews are working to complete the repairs as quickly as possible.
The outage will affect customers in Athlone Town, Baylin, Mount Temple, The Ories, Garrycastle, Dublin Road, Ardnaglug, Fardrum, Moydrum, Blyry, Killyon Hill, Bonavalley and surrounding areas.
Some customers may also experience temporary, intermittent, low pressure today while the repair works continue.
Typically it takes two to three hours following essential works for normal supply to restore to all customers.
John Gavin, Regional Operations Lead with Irish Water says;
"This restriction is necessary to safeguard daytime water supply for all homes and business in Athlone and surrounding areas. Repairs are progressing and are being conducted as quickly and as efficiently as possible at the water treatment plant. Irish Water understands the inconvenience night-time restrictions can have on customers and it appreciates customers’ patience as we work to complete the repairs and restore normal water supply to all customers."
Vulnerable customers who have registered with Irish Water receive direct communications for planned and unplanned outages lasting more than four hours.
The Irish Water customer care helpline is open 24/7 on 1800 278 278 and customers can also direct queries towards @IWCare on Twitter.
