Gardaí conducted over 7,000 checkpoints in Ireland last month.
50 people were arrested for driving under the influence in the midlands over the Christmas and New Year Period.
Figures released by the Gardaí show 28 of those were in the Laois and Offaly area, two of whom were arrested for drug driving.
Gardaí arrested 22 motorists for driving while under the influence in Westmeath, three of whom failed a roadside drug test.
Nationally, Gardaí conducted over 7,000 checkpoints since the first of December - in that time, 745 people were charged with a DUI.
Over 14,000 speeding offences were also detected.
