The Circular Economy and Waste Statistics Highlights Report from the EPA shows that municipal waste recycling in Ireland stood at 41%, far lower than the 55% needed by 2025.
The report has also found there's a strong regional variation in terms of households with an organic bin.
Just over a quarter of midlands households have an organic bin - the figure is 42% in Laois, followed by 24% in Offaly and 16% in Westmeath.
