The number of drug possession incidents in a Westmeath town have tripled, compared to this time last year.
Last year, there were 107 charges of this crime in Mullingar - this year, that figure has increased massively to 319.
Superintendent David Nolan has blamed the increase on a number of festivals the region, such as Light Festival and Body & Soul.
In Athlone, the number of drug possession incidents has seen a significant decrease, down 17 percent.
In Mullingar and Athlone, the number of people arrested for possession of drugs for sale or supply has seen a substantial reduction, down 47 and 45 percent, respectively.
