Laois Man To Take Over As IFA President At Today's AGM

The Irish Farmers' Association is hosting its 69th AGM today.

The 69th AGM of the Irish Farmers' Association is taking place in Dublin today.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar will be the guest of honour later this evening.

Today's meeting will see Francie Gorman from Laois deliver his inaugural speech as he takes over from current President, Tipperary's Tim Cullinan.

On his election he said he wanted to unify farmers and get rid of the negative view of the farming community within the climate action debate.

Today's event also sees the first female deputy president of the association when Wexford's Alice Doyle takes the reins.

As well as the Taoiseach's attendance at this evening's dinner, Agriculture Minister Charlie McConologue will also address the meeting at the Irish Farm Centre.

Farmers' faith in the Department of Agriculture has been "shattered" according to the new IFA President.

At the Irish Farmers' Association AGM today, Laois man Francie Gorman was officially inaugarated as the President of the organisation.

In his speech, he told farmers that they should all be "proud" of their work, and that farmers have all made significant changes to "reduce emissions and improve biodiversity".

Mr Gorman also addressed the Minister for Agriculture, Charlie McConalogue, claiming that he and the rest of the Department have "not lived up to their side of the bargain"
