Man Charged With Causing Death To Laois Student Denied Bail

Kieran Fogarty is said to have been driving dangerously and at speed moments before the crash.

A man has been denied bail after being charged with causing the death of a midlands student.

21 year old Joe Drennan was hit by a car at a bus stop on the Dublin Road in Castletroy on October 13th.

20 year old Kieran Fogarty of Hyde Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston in Limerick appeared at Limerick District Court earlier, on three charges relating to the alleged hit and run.

A later bail hearing was told that Gardaí had seen a black BMW driving “dangerously” and “at speed” moments before the fatal crash.

Mr Fogarty allegedly overtook a garda patrol car at speed as he drive the BMW from the Annacotty area towards Limerick City.

Detective Garda Shane O'Neill alleges that the BMW broke a red light and collided with another car, injuring two occupants.

Its his case that Mr Fogarty then “lost control” of the BMW and struck Mr Drennan who was fatally injured.

Objecting to bail the detective claimed that DNA from an airbag in the BMW matched Kieran Fogarty.

He claimed that Mr Fogarty was in his opinion, “a danger to the community” and should not be released on bail.

Judge Carol Anne Coolican said Mr Fogarty was entitled to the presumption of innocence and that the charges against him were “allegations”.

She remanded Mr Fogarty in custody to appear before Limerick District Court via video-link on 23 January.
