There were over 30,000 wastewater treatment systems in Laois, Offaly and Westmeath at the end of 2022, according to the CSO.
The midlands accounted for just over 5% of new waste water treatment systems in 2022.
345 new systems were registered in the region last year, according to new figures from the CSO.
As of the end of 2022, there were 32,150 registered domestic waste water treatment systems in the midlands - 12,070 of those are in Westmeath, 10,086 in Laois and 9,994 are in Offaly.
Nationally, there was a 1.2% increase in the number of waste water treatment systems.
